There are plenty of activities to do around Chalabre and the region.
Chateau de Chalabre
The Château de Chalabre sits on the slopes above the house and the village and is open to the public.
As well as looking around the house and grounds, there are also lots of activities for children.
For younger ones there is plenty to do including jousting training on ponies, archery and various workshops.
For teenagers there is a high wires course, similar to Go Ape in the UK.
There is a small cafe and shop.
Lakes
There are several lakes that have beaches where you can swim.
The first pictured here is at Puivert, about ten minutes drive from Chalabre and there are two small cafes selling food and drinks.
The second is at Quillan, a 40 minute drive, with some great views as you wind down the hairpin bends to the town. In the summer, there is an inflatable assault course as well as a very pleasant bar on the hillside above. There is covered parking and good toilets and changing facilities. Across the road from the car park is a large hypermarket for stocking up on supplies.
Lac de Montbel is a larger reservoir, 570 hectares near Chalabre, with a beach, restaurant and sailing boats and canoes for hire.
Bikes
Excellent quality bikes, including electric ones, can be hired from the Carrefour Express, two minutes from the house.
From Chalabre there is a cycle path, called the Voie Verte (Greenway), that follows the route of an old railway line for 38km.
Heading to Lavelanet one way and Mirepoix in the opposite direction, with several tunnels that have lighting. It is well paved, flat, with information boards and is a great way to see the sunflower fields and apple orchards.
The Greenway can be joined by the bridge over the River l’Hers.
Walking
From the house there is a lovely walk up to a chapel, Chapelle du Calvaire, on the hills above the village.
The Labyrinthe Vert (Green Labyrinth) at Nébias is a mysterious maze of limestone, roots and moss and the source of many local legends.
Chalabre is crossed by the hiking trail GR7 from Mirepoix to Andorra la Vella.
Skiing
The closest ski area is Mont D’Olmes, a forty-five minute drive.
It is just over an hour’s drive to Ax-Les-Thermes and Ax-3- Domaines ski resorts which offer some of the best skiing in the Pyrenees.
The 3 Domaines offers 80 kilometres of slopes with green runs for beginners and the black runs for those looking for a thrill.
For après-ski, Ax-Les-Thermes has plenty to offer including thermal baths.
Seaside and beaches
The beaches in the Languedoc, about two hours drive, are long and sandy.
The nearest beach is at Gruissan, 125 Km, 1 Hour 40 mins by car.
Between the sea and lagoons there is the old circular village of Gruissan, two marinas and Gruissan Plage with its picturesque neighbourhood made up of 1300 chalets on stilts.

There are some excellent beaches near Perpignan. Argelès North is regularly voted as one of the best beaches in France.
Further south, you’ll find the charming and historic coastal villages of Collioure and Banyuls-Sur-Mer.
Cathar Castles
There are numerous castles around this area, from the semi-ruins of Château de Puivert to the more complete Château de Foix.
Many are perched on hill tops such as the Château de Montségur.
Tennis
There are tennis courts in Chalabre available for hire.
Next to the courts, there is a sculpture of some famous tennis players depicted as Samurai warriors.
Golf
Golf de Carcassonne, located 10 minutes southeast of the medieval town, is a Par 71 (5758m) course with an international reputation due to the exceptional quality of its fairways and rolling greens.
The course can be played all year.
